Betty Hobson is the President and CEO of Church Services, Inc, a multifaceted provider of church supplies, religious curriculum, church attire and furnishings. The enterprise has over 150 regular standing customers and has served over 500 ministries nationwide.  The business had humble beginnings in 1990 as a small two-room retail outlet at 1177 Madison, primarily offering Sunday School and bible study curriculum. Hearing the hearts of countless customers seeking other church related items, offerings were expanded to include choir and clergy wear as well as Vacation Bible School materials. Because of God’s favor and excellent service rendered, the original space was outgrown and Ms. Hobson moved across the street to the current CSI retail location at 1200 Madison Avenue in 1995. In this venue, CSI was able to have more room to include a full line of sanctuary furniture. Not only is Ms. Hobson an entrepreneur, she is also active in the community. In 1998, she joined other like-minded civic leaders in forming the Memphis Area Nonprofit Business Development Initiative to promote the advancement of faith-based organizations, the same group to hold the first annual Mid-South Faith Based Conference and secure the first Memphis visit of the co-founder of the Boston Ten Point Coalition, Rev. Eugene Rivers. This group also held conferences in 1999 and 2000. To ensure the success of the endeavors, Ms. Hobson provided of her time, services, and store merchandise, exhibiting how Christian business owners can practice faith and good business simultaneously. Ms. Hobson further exhibited the spirit of giving back by participating in the Memphis Mentoring Partnership, a collaboration of the Memphis/Shelby County Crime Commission and a coalition of faith, business, and civic leaders, as a member of the inaugural leadership council in 2000-01.
The local business community has also noticed CSI . The Black Business
Association of Memphis honored Ms. Hobson as Woman and Business of the year
in 2000, the same year the African American Black Caucus of Tennessee Legislators gave her the Economic and Community Development Award.

The Mid South Women in Business Award was given to Ms. Hobson in 2001, a year
whose climax included being elected 1st female chairperson of the Black Business
Association of Memphis. She received the Spirit Memphis Christian Magazine award in
2007 and was recently selected to participate in a study of the motivations and success strategies of African American Women Business Owners based on Dunn and
Bradstreet reporting Ms. Hobson as an African American female entrepreneur with
annual revenue of at least 1 million dollars. In 2003, CSI expanded its retail outlet by
adding an additional location in the Southland Mall to be more accessible to the
numerous Churches in the Whitehaven and North Mississippi areas. During that same
growth period, CSI began to experience gains in the areas of sanctuary furniture,
choir and clergy wear. In 2004, a direct sales operation solely focused on providing total solutions programs (TSP) for ministries was developed and launched so that CSI could provide virtually all the needs of new and growing congregations. In addition to
established sales lines of church furniture and attire, audio-visual systems, steeples, and construction financing consultation lines were implemented.

TSP’s growth necessitated consolidation of retail sales at one location and TSP at another location. Thus, 2005 brought about the expansion of CSI into two entities: Church Services, Inc. and CSI Direct Sales. Church Services, Inc. at 1200 Madison provides church supplies and bible-based curriculum while CSI Direct at 3158 Bellbrook provides total solutions programs for ministries. CSI is presently the only African American female owned full service religious supplier serving churches nationwide. Ms. Hobson is an example of operating by faith daily. She is also an active member of Brown Missionary Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi. As a God-fearing Christian woman, she exercises faith in her lifestyle and Business. She is an example of what entrepreneurship ought to embody as she is training her two daughters to operate the retail portion of CSI. She has entrusted the daily operations of Church Services to them and mentors them with her many years of experience.
